Contemporary and thought-provoking, this book provides a definition of the concept of One Welfare: A Framework to improve Animal Welfare and Human Wellbeing. The book establishes a conceptual framework, in five sections, resulting from a three month global consultation on a draft proposal comprising nine areas.

The book contains:

  • A one welfare approach which complements and extends the existing one health approach
  • A range of prestigious contributions from key opinion leaders in the field of animal welfare which help to define the framework
  • A platform for the development of more collaborative and integrated animal welfare standards and policies

One Welfare complements the One Health and Eco Health approaches, enabling full integration of animal welfare within other disciplines; a much needed tool to help improve animal welfare, human wellbeing and environmental components, and support worldwide sustainable development goals for all those keen to extend the one health approach to animal welfare and human wellbeing.

 Publication background

A consultation to define a One Welfare conceptual framework took place between February and May 2018. It was designed to enable everyone with an interest to comment on the proposed framework and each of the sections as well as the interconnection with One Health. It also provided an opportunity to contribute any supporting evidence material that respondents would like to put forward.

Respondents were able to reply as an organisation and were able to request a pre-made presentation to facilitate their discussion.

Consultation responses were accepted online and via email.

All consultation responses were collated and presented at two workshops and a webinar where attendees had an opportunity to comment further on any final points. After this, all the data was collated in the format of a book report. A number of named experts reviewed sections relevant to their expertise and 20 different organisations contributed wtih practical case studies.

All of the work above was undertaken as an unpaid voluntary initiative. The conceptual framework has been published as a book by CABI.  There is a crowdfunding campaign raising funds to make the e-book free access to everyone. All contributions are welcomed at this stage. Paperback and Hardback copies are available for purchase in the conventional way.

The name or organisation of those responding to the consultation are listed in the acknowledgement sections of the book, unless they indicated they would not like their name listed.
