2020 has been a world changing year for all
The COVID-19 pandemic has dominated our lives with the consequent impacts on the wellbeing of animals and the physical and social environment. To support the pandemic and highlight the interconnections between animal welfare, human wellbeing and the environment we participated in a video campaign and created a bespoke COVID-19 section with a range of resources for people, animals and the environment collated with the help of volunteers that came forward from various countries.
2020 has seen progressive growth of the One Welfare concept with many calling publicly for adoption of the concept alongside One Health. The Ministry of Agriculture from Ireland has already set up a 'One Health, One Welfare' directorate under the Chief Veterinary Officer and one of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) collaborating centres includes the concept too. An Animals' Manifesto signed by 70 different NGOs has called for steps to incorporate One Welfare, alongside One Health, into policies. All of these steps recognise how key One Welfare is to ensuring an equitable, sustainable and humane future. One of our core messages resonates strongly: adopting a One Welfare approach is vital to ensure a better world for all.
Academia has started to pick up the pace incorporating the concept into the official curriculum. We have been very pleased to see interest in a number of countries and have collaborated with new postgraduate university degrees that integrate teaching of the concept at official level in Colombia and Spain. This new and upcoming future initiatives come together as part of One Welfare Learning (OWL) to support One Welfare in education.
Our new One Welfare Phoenix project launched and during the year the advisory board met four times and agreed to set up five working groups. Advisory board members have presented the project and help disseminate the interconnection between animal and human abuse among the dairy cattle community and scientist in latinamerica. We are also working hard to kick start the very exciting One Welfare Silkworm project in the new year with our first advisory board meeting.
2021 will be a great year for One Welfare with the One Welfare World conference coming up in September. We are very close to launch further conference information so keep an eye for this !
We would like to thank all our contributors, ambassadors and volunteers for their support and work. Furthermore we would like to thank everyone else who is a supporter of the One Welfare concept and is helping us to raise awareness, disseminate and implement such an important concept to support collaborative work and help creating a better world for all.
